The film is partially based on the manuscript of Ronald Harrison’s autobiographical memoirs, The Black Christ: My journey to Freedom. Published in 2006 by New Africa Books, Ronald Harrison book presents an intimate account of his experience as a child during apartheid, to his anti-apartheid artistic activism as a young adult, then to his hopes for the post-apartheid South Africa. Meticulously constructed from memory, Harrison’s story of an artist and political activist is presented in greater detail than any film can capture. The book is a must read if you want to immerse yourself in the honest, impassioned and articulate account of what it means to stand up for justice and righteousness against an immoral state and the price one pays for doing so.
Ronald Harrison was born on the 18 March 1940 in the suburb of Athlone, Cape Town, but lived the first four years of his life in Kimberley. After returning to Cape Town, Ronald described his childhood as ‘nomadic’ - his family often moved from place to place and he lived in many different Cape Town communities, including District Six, Ottery and Salt River.
